Art Teacher, MONART School of the Arts
A Bay-Area native, I received my B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and my M.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. I studied art at The Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, and for the past three years I have explored my interest in the human figure in clay with sculptor Trisha Kyner through the Civic Arts Education program in Walnut Creek. My professional work experience includes teaching at the college level, but closer to my heart has been my recent work with the children in my daughter’s kindergarten and first-grade classrooms.
As a shy child I began drawing at a young age as an outlet for self-expression. My first grade teacher, however, scolded me for painting my valentines blue rather than red or pink. Luckily I had the support of my mom at home. She told me that I had an interesting way of seeing things. By adding blue food coloring to her pancakes and cookies for a few days, she taught me that my creative ingenuity is limitless.
Because of my experience, I strongly believe in supporting a child’s unique ways of viewing our world and in the importance of art in a child’s life. I began working with MONART Alameda as a way to act more fully on my beliefs. I also enjoy a fire in the fireplace, walking the dog, dancing around the living room to music, and chocolate.
